This week, Alex takes the £1 Volvo to Volvo specialists GB Autos for a full health check and an OEM parts and labour repairs quote. I mean, how bad can it be...?

  • Wow I needed to see this! I promised myself one of these or an 850 when (if) I get my license back. I've been told with the type of epilepsy I have I'll probably never drive again. It that is how much one of these cost if say I bought one for £6k and it had only half of these faults its still a 3k bill. I can fix some of these faults myself but it'll still hurt my wallet. Keep my fucking license. I'll stick to my bicycle.

  • Truth is for a cheap free motor you wouldn't take to a specialist just take it down to volvo breakers £1600 quid tops

  • When Ford own Volvo the cars were awful my dad got a brand new s40 2005 and water pump went after a year

  • Would’ve been MUCH cheaper to buy the faulty parts from a scrap yard - if you have the time and knowledge to get into that. It’ll never stop to amaze me how you can have a complete vehicle and then a few spare parts cost more than the vehicle cost almost the same as the entire thing did from new before the various taxes.

  • It feels disingenuous to include all those things in the bill. With a car that old you are not looking to make it look, feel and drive factory new. You are looking to make it safe enough to be used on a public road.

  • For £20c he broke £1k radio set. For OEM repair cost almost £7k ! Worth £2 ride for Off Roading.

  • Back in 2000, I bought myself 96, T5 R, and it was the worst car I'd ever had .... In terms of the build quality and the finish, I lost interest with it very quickly, and after 6 months traded it in for a Bimmer E36, M3 which turned out to be the best cat I ever bought ....

  • Randomly I used to work at this garage , unlike other places I’ve worked this garage actually does things properly and I can’t recommend them enough . And Tom if you see this well done glad to see your doing alright 👍🏻.

  • Watching this makes me glad I live in the U.S. I'm in a state that doesn't require inspections. I'd just drive that until the engine quit. But also. Could save yourself 2k by not dealing with the cosmetic stuff. Like 1-2k by buying aftermarket equipment and another 2k for doing it yourself. Literally all of that stuff is doable if you are mechanically inclined. Whole car would cost about 2-2500. Totally worth it.

  • What is really scary is that a 54 plate Volvo has a fault in every module. I have a 52 plate Hyundai with zero fault codes and it's just passed it's MOT a couple of months ago. Not bad for a 19 year old car.

  • I think that if it had been maintained over its life it would have been no more than £2000 but to now buy all volvo spares is just stupid. Scrap stuff from the breakers and poly bushes would be the obvious start point. Playing silly games with the software is the only non diy job. Thing is most cars without the computer crap are a scrap job anyway. Shame really.

  • imo aftermarket parts and about 1400 pounds! contorl arms about 100pounds and 6 bolts u can do it yourself. I dont bother to mention the rest...

  • Polishing headlights works GREAT if you get a good kit and take your time... SMH

  • I had a V70 II D5. It really was a bad car, not Volvo worthy. Numerous electrical problems: engine stalls without reason (very dangerous), dashboard fails several times, automatic transmission problems. The rubber parts of the front suspension had to be changed every 20.000 km. Glad I sold it.

  • I wasted 1h totaling all these parts and you aren't fixing it... dum ass... 😆

  • "Sylvania headlight restoration kit" will fix those headlights very nicely.

  • Our v70 d5 has 530.000km =-330k miles. Unkillable

  • I had the same car and then a more recent D5 with Geartronic. Changing the cam belt was always a very expensive job with water pump coming out at the same time. The GPS failed and injectors needed a change and offloaded the car at 395.000 kms. The biggest disappointment was the Volvo dealer.

  • You can buy antiroll-bar bushing no problem.

  • never go to this service for repair.

  • Just goes to show what a rip off some garages are. 900 quid for the steering rack then 500 quid to fit it. Jog on. Source the part yourself and learn how to fit it yourself. You'll learn about your car and save a bunch of money. You'll make mistakes but you don't get ripped off.

  • Try the scrappy for parts and that car will back on the road better still buy another car for swapping parts.

  • This is kind of why I don't go to dealers and order stuff myself. Few months back, my car was broken into. Broken the doorhandle on my 2010 Fiat Punto Evo, went to the dealer because of the remote control key stuff. They'd charge me €980 (£750), did it myself for under €150 (£120), only had to get someone else to do the remote control key programming, he only charged me €35 £20 whereas the Fiat dealer would charge me €450 £350 for only that!!!

  • Fuck.. I got quoted £320 for a timing chain and tensioners (labour included) and thought I was going to die but I feel MUCH better now.

  • How does someone do this much damage to a fucking volvo!! You know the car where the engines can last way over 3/400k miles and a crash would probably cause more Damage to the other vehicle

  • Dealer will charge you £1300 for pads and discs on a 2017 VW golf. You can purchase upgraded discs and pads for a golf R for £300. Equivalent Dealer charges £500 an hour labour for something you could do yourself in a couple hours. Then you find out the car only needed pads and the discs are all ok. Local garage will charge £120. £420 versus £1300. UK dealer rip off.

  • i had a 164 back in the day it was neither reliable or cheap to repair then. As was the later 240.

  • Thats an eye watering price list, my Merc SL wiper motor cost £78 new from mercedes, this lots having a laugh , Buy second hand parts and do the job yourself !

  • You expect that sort of pricing from a dealer, not an independent, but he did require 'OEM' parts. This was more of a stunt because he was going to race it anyway. Volvo dealers are always disappointing, to be avoided if atall possible.

  • I've refurbed foggier headlights than that with a bit of wet and dry sandpaper and some turtle wax lens cleaner and sealant, total cost under £10. No way anyone with a brain is paying £873 for that.

  • Make a series about fixing the needed stuff so it can be used as a daily. Using second hand parts and non OEM parts

  • Ah bangernomics. We bought our 850 estate in 1998. It has now done over 300,000 miles, I'll throw any amount of money at it because the value off the car is the sum of more than just the sale price. The reality is that doing most of the work myself, I mentally budget £500 per year in maintenance and it's usually a tiny fraction of that. It still does everything today that it used to and every system has always been maintained and still works. There are other cars available on the drive but I still enjoy the 850 as an armchair relaxed drive. It has its share of bodywork marks, mostly from the children but it's a family member so despite two random people recently knocking on the door asking to buy it, it's going nowhere!

  • Those prices are a joke, scrapyards and ebay would make it much less.

  • On the other side.. its a Volvo and OEM parts are expensive.. if you want to drive cheap... buy a Fiat Panda, and dont annoy the other Volvo drivers with: is this normal?, is a dealer always that expensive?, is this the correct price for?, does anybody knows cheap... the answer is NO.. if you cannot afford it, dont drive it.

  • My mates chipped D5 did 600000 km before it yeeted the turbo, so I’d say it’s barely broken in that one!

    • Btw the guy sees grease and he said the intercooler is off. Man u have to stupid enough to not understand that the intercooler holds air and not fluid

  • You can polish headlights and it does come out good this guy just want to sell you new headlights. Buy scrap yard parts i bet that wouldn't that expensive to fix and on a shitbox like that it doesn't need to be new parts 1£ for a car that is running is a steal

  • you get absolutely hosed in the UK, here in Canada parts are way cheaper and inspections are far les stringent.

  • So go to a local independent. I didn’t spend this on my 20y old v70 in the 11 years I own it.. And I use original parts were needed, oem or used parts where possible.

  • Great car. Just run in. New mount, fix intercooler and a good water blast and she'll be like new !

  • If you buy a £1 car, shouldn’t the right approach be, that you know what’s wrong and right with it before the purchase? It’s either a steal and an easy fix, or it’s a donor for parts that are to be used for an identical car you fix on the cheap with it, or you don’t buy it. What we saw here, is the purchase of someone else’s misery, resulting in the surprising discoveries that A) broken cars are no fun and B) not using your brain to think about what you’re doing may result in stupid outcomes and C) the target audience for this show seems to be brainless people in need of transport, but who are fed up with disappointing themselves due to their stupidity, but unable to change their actions without seeing one of their peers laying it out on video, so they can better themselves and take a first step towards being less of a moron.

  • Biggest lesson here is never go near this garage 1k for lights lol I had mine machines up for 30£ looked like new any competent person could turn that car round for a fraction of that cost on the side of the road you have not done garages/ mechanics any favours with this video it's actually frightening to see how much of a replace not repair world we live in

  • Here in CEE, this car would have been fixed for 1/5th of that quote, thus you would never find it sold for one pound.

  • Funny on mine I went on eBay and went to local scrappies and sorted a lot of issues for no more than a couple of hundred quid. Not worth paying dealers/specialists prices for a 16 year old, high mileage estate car.

  • Get most parts from a scrapper for 1/10 of the price
